2019 Championship rules & events

Competition Rules

  IMPORTANT NOTICE:  ALL balck belt sparring competitors MUST have sparring socks.  We will be using electroninc the PPS with E-Headgear for all black belt divisions.  If you do not have socks they may be purchased at: www.truescoreusa.com.


COMPETITION REGULATIONS: The competition regulations will be based on modified WT and USAT Regulations. 


Current WTF Kyorugi and Poomsae Competition rules will govern this championship for World Class divisions. 6-17 year old Black Belt Divisions will use WSTA approved junior safety rules for sparring.

OFFICIAL UNIFORMS: All World Class Black Belt competitors must wear WTF Approved or similar style (Must be a WTF style uniform. No short sleeve, heavyweight, karate style, etc will be accepted) Black V-neck uniform (White Dobok) in good condition. Color belt sparring contestants are required to wear, WTF approved or similar style (Must be a WTF style uniform. No short sleeve, heavyweight, karate style, etc will be accepted) White or Black V-neck White uniform. For all other color belt contestants, colored uniforms are allowed for all events other than Sparring. Poomsae uniforms are optional. Patches, embroidery, logos, team names, country names, athlete names, and stripes are permitted on uniforms. NO TAPE WILL BE ALLOWED ON ANY PART OF THE UNIFORM.

SPARRING EQUIPMENT: All Sparring Black Belts and Color Belt athletes will be responsible for supplying their own headgear, chestguard, gloves, foot pads, arm and shin guards, and mouth guards.


PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Contestants shall wear an approved trunk protector, headgear (white, black, or red for Hong and blue for Chung), groin guard (mandatory for male and female competitors), gloves (mandatory for 12 + Black Belts), forearm protector, shin-instep protectors, and mouth guard before entering the contest area. No eye glasses or goggles (Safety sports goggles will be permitted if a protected by a headgear with clear plastic face guard), prescription or nonprescription allowed.


PROTECTIVE GLOVES: All Black Belts are required to wear WTF-approved style Taekwondo gloves. Gloves may be red, blue, or white while white is preferred. Competitors who choose to wear red or blue gloves must correspond with the color of the chest protector. Gloves must be open finger style. For all other divisions, gloves are optional and must comply with the above rule.


KNEE & ELBOW PADS: The use of kneepads and/or elbow pads is OPTIONAL. Kneepads or elbow pads, if worn, must be foam, cloth, or vinyl, and must be worn under the Taekwondo uniform. Any colors are allowed.


MOUTH GUARD: All athletes are REQUIRED to wear mouth guards. A mouth cover may be used for those with braces if an orthodontist’s note is provided prior to the beginning of competition.


HEADGEAR: All sparring participants must provide their own white, black or red AND blue headgear with no markings other than corporate logos. If the competitor chooses to wear red or blue headgear, it must correspond with the color of the chest protector. Competitors will not be permitted to wear headgears with cracks or defects. There is no exception to this policy.


PROTECTIVE CUP: All athletes are REQUIRED to wear a protective cup inside the pants during competition. Groin protection is MANDATORY for female athletes; and must be worn inside the uniform pants.


SHIN & INSTEP PROTECTION: Shin and instep protectors are REQUIRED, and they must be made of foam, cloth or vinyl. . If an athlete chooses to wear foam padding, it must be taped on and it must cover the area from the base of the toes, over the top of the instep to the side of the foot, with no more than two layers of tape. Additional shin or instep protection must be approved and stamped by the Sports Medicine Department for the purpose of protecting an injury.


FOREARM GUARDS: Forearm guards are REQUIRED and it is mandatory that athletes wear only foam, cloth, or vinyl products. Any color forearm guard will be allowed.

Black Belt Sparring Weight Divisions and Competition Format Organizing committee has the right to change, modify the duration of rounds, divisions and make official decisions without prior notices.


KYORUGI COMPETITION:

All Ages & All Color Belts: Single elimination bracket, 2 Rounds, 1 minute round with 30 second rest period. 6‐7 and 8-9, 10-11 Year Old Black Belt: Single elimination bracket, 2 Rounds, 1 minute round with 30 second rest period. Cadet Division (12-14 Year Olds) 

Black Belt: Single elimination bracket, 2 Rounds, 90 second round with 30 second rest period. JUNIOR DIVISIONS (15‐17 Year Olds) 

BLACK BELTS: Single elimination bracket, 2 Rounds, 90 second round with 30 second rest period. 

SENIOR DIVISIONS (18 & Over) BLACK BELTS: Single elimination bracket, 2 Rounds 2 Minutes with a 30 second rest period. All Golden Point rounds will consist of a 1 Minute Round.


*Athletes are not permitted to enter more than one weight category, per age division. **Athletes must compete in their age divisions that they fall in based on their current age at the time of the competition day. An Athlete cannot compete “Up or Down” in age & weight divisions with the exception of 17 year old black belt competitors who will be permitted to spar in the senior (18-32 yo) division.

All Color Belts – No Head Contact

Black Belts:

11 Years and Under & Ultra: No Head Contact

12 Years – 17 Years: JSR (Light Head Contact)

Senior Division: Full Contact

World Class Sparring Divisions: Cadet, Junior and Senior divisions are FULL Contact. WT Rules.

World Class Sparring Division Participants must have their own Gen 1 or Gen 2 socks.


Poomsae Competition

Poomsae Guidelines COMPETITION RULES: WT Poomsae Competition Rules will apply for all World Class Poomsae Competitors.


METHOD OF COMPETITION: All Grass Roots Color Belt and Black Belt Poomsae competitors will compete in a Bracket Style Head to head competition of Compulsory Poomsae of their choice. Contestants must perform the same poomsae throughout the entire bracket. Please see compulsory Poomsae list for further information. Cut-off system for World Class Color Belt s and Black Belts Only: The cut-off system shall comprise the Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final rounds.

1) Preliminaries: When 20 or more competitors are participating; competition shall start from the Preliminary round with division of groups at different rings, and may be judged by different judges. Competitors shall perform one(1) designated compulsory Poomsae, and the top 8 of each group shall advance to Semi-Final based on the highest scores.

2) Semi-Final selection: When 9 to 19 competitors are participating; competition shall start from the Semi-Final round. Competitors shall perform one(1) designated compulsory Poomsae, and 8 of them shall be advanced to Final based on the highest scores.

3) Final: When 8 or fewer competitors are participating, competition shall start from the Final Round. Competitors shall perform two(2) designated compulsory Poomsae, and the top four individual competitors/pairs/team shall be awarded prizes based on their total points in the final round. In the case of a tie, competitor with the higher total presentation points wins. 3rd and 4th places are awarded with bronze medals.

*World Class Poomsae Designation: Designated Poomsae will be published on Washington State Taekwondo Association *Pairs and team poomsae can consist of mixed or same gender. Team poomsae will consist of 3 to 5 members.


Board Breaking Guidelines

All-Around Breaking. All-Around Breaking can be freely composed by contestants using breaking techniques.

①Competition method: Cut-off

②Competition Time:30 Seconds or less (60 Sec setup)

③Compulsory regulations

1.The Breaking targets shall be authorized by the Organization Committee.

2.The breaking targets are restricted to pine boards(7–15 boards).

3. Assistants arelimitedto10members.

④ Marking methods

1. Accuracy

A. Number of broken targets: 0.1 point deduction per unbroken target

B. Landing: Unbalanced landing after a technical Skill presentation will incur a 0.1-point.

C. Exceeding the time(0.3 point deduction shall be applied per 10 seconds.)

D. If the contestant falls down when executing the landing position, 0.3 will be deducted for each fall.

E. If the number of assistants is more than 15 people, 0.3 point deduction per one extra assistant.

2. Program arrangement

A. Difficulty : Level of difficulty while performing techniques. (The higher and the greater number of rotations gets the higher point.

B. Expressivity: Evaluate and grade the level of accurate and stable technical expression while remaining in the air

C. Creativeness: Scoring is done in accordance with the degree of the performing diverse set composition and new techniques for breaking.

D. Program arrangement points will not be deducted for every mistake. Instead, points will be deducted after watching the overall All-round Breaking program.

DEMONSTRATION TEAM COMPETITION:

1. Maximum set up time is 1 minute & clean up time is 1 minute.

2. The maximum time to complete the demonstration is 6 Minutes.

3. The demonstration should be done in the 8m x 8m area as governed by the WT.

5. Music System will be available at the competition venue. Each team must submit the music one day prior to the event.

6. No pyrotechnics, fireworks or rockets.

7. Weapons or other accessories shall be provided by the demonstration team.

8. No tables or chairs are allowed.

Demonstration Team Competition

Team Competition refers to creatively composing and displaying the designated Taekwondo movements.

① Competition method: Cut-off

② Competition time: 6 minutes or less

③ Uniform: Uniform can be chosen to match the theme

Number of contestants: Maximum of 9 members


Demonstration Teams may be disqualified by the referees or organizing committee if they deem it necessary. Teams may be disqualified for the following:

A. Conducting undesirable acts

B. Disturbing the referee or the staff to proceed during the competition

F. If fireworks or actual weapons are used

G. If the performance theme offends any government or religion
